The latest magazine created by former POP editor in chief Dasha Zhukova hits newstands later this month. Well, 'newstands' is perhaps incorrect: Garage - an oversized glossy tome of considerable heft - is set to sell at high-end magazine retailers and more than a few galleries.

In fact, that's the ethos of the magazine as a whole - titled after Zhukova's Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow and exploring the intersection between the art and fashion worlds. Opening the magazine, that's the first thing that hits you. The pages are peppered with high-fashion - as you would imagine from any contemporary style bible - but equally present is high-art. You don't even need to crack the spine to tell that: the first issue of Garage has three different versions, sporting varied covers. That has become a standard magazine practise in recent years - however, less standard is the fact that one sees model Lily Donaldson transformed into a bulbous-headed doll in Nick Knight and Dinos Chapman's collaboration; one sports a smiley-faced Richard Prince print, and a third is photographed by Hedi Slimane but features no fashion at all. It does, however, feature a Damien Hirst tattoo across model Shauna Taylor's crotch - hidden for modesty's sake (and legality) by a peel-off butterfly.

Garage is the latest in a series of art-fashion ventures, where the merger of the worlds have become less of a collision and more of a collaboration. Back in February, the Gagosian Gallery Paris mounted Fleurs d'Excès, an exhibition of narcotic-inspired jewellery by Christian Dior designer Victoire de Castellane; London designer Richard Nicoll has been collaborating with seminal punk artist Linder Sterling for two years; and Louis Vuitton has plans for a 'Foundation for Creation' to launch next year, matching their contemporary art-stuffed flagships worldwide (we're talking original Koons and Murakami here, not a Picasso print in a dodgy clip-frame).

But Garage takes this to a different level. We offered a sneak preview back in June, streaming Nick Knight's collaboration with Dinos Chapman live from the studio floor (the editorial images will be showcased on site in line with the magazine's publication during London Fashion Week), and the collaborations through the magazine continue in the same vein, with pieces from Marina Abramović, Paul McCarthy and Matthew Day Jackson rubbing shoulders with the fashion world elite like Joan Juliet Buck and Giovanna Battaglia, who crafts a series of garments from foodstuffs. Culinary couture or Cuisine-art? A McQueen ballgown rendered in lush lettuce fronds and Vuitton fur coat executed entirely from walnuts definitely tread the line.

That's fashion going art, but Pinar Yolaçan's work seemed to be art going fashion - her figures were swathed head-to-toe in instantly recognisable Missoni fabrics, faces limbs and even bodies obscured by the vibrant graphics of the fabrics, with more than an air of Leigh Bowery, the grandmaster of s-art-orial extremism, about them. It brings a whole new meaning to the term 'making an exhibition of oneself.' Knight and Chapman's collaboration is intriguing because it fuses the trademarks of both: the macabre, distorted vision of Dinos Chapman, so often obsessed with twisted notions of innocence combines with Knight's urge to push the technical boundaries of image-making and his continuing exploration of ideas of beauty outside of the still-strict confines of fashion's 'norm'. The result? Lily Donaldson as photoshopped Blythe doll in a subversive playhouse pock-marked with glory-holes and anarchic graffiti, but dressed in the best of Autumn/Winter 2011 from Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu and Mary Katrantzou.

Overview Artist Curator

For our second project in Venice, we are presenting the mobile installationCommercial Breakfrom 1 to 5 June 2011 as part of the opening week of the 54th Venice Biennale.

On a giant mobile video screen, which will sail through the center of Venice, over eighty artists engage with the relationship between advertising and culture. The short digital works by globally recognized and emerging artists from around the world will bring the form and language of advertising to Venice. The project is curated by Neville Wakefield and powered by POST magazine. Since the early days of Pop – think Lichtenstein, Ruscha and Warhol - art has drawn direct influence from the language of advertising in the creation of hybrid collisions of high and low cultural forms. Nowhere are these collisions more evident than in the city of Venice, host to one of the most well-established and oldest Biennale in the world. Steeped in history and tourism, it is a city of contradictions, a place where every two years art and the traditions of the past play host to the provocations of the present. Venice is a city of commerce without commercials – a place that advertises only itself.

Commercial Break is both an intervention with the architecture of the city and an iPad application created by POST, the world’s first magazine created specifically for the iPad. The special art issue will allow readers to explore individual artists and films for the 5 months of the Biennale as well as on location in Venice.

POST

Founded by Alexander Dellal, Remi Paringaux and Xerxes Cook, POST is an only child, born of the iPad. With no print sibling to imitate or be intimidated by, POST looks beyond the traditional rules of how and what magazines ‘should’ be, in favour of speculating upon what magazines could be. Liberated from the imposing heritage of paper culture, POST exists in an entirely virtual realm, yet is intimately connected to material through the medium of touch. Inherently interactive, POST presents a truly multimedia, multi-sensory journey from the first frame to the last, where even the advertisements are immersive, tactile experiences.

During the five months of the Venice Biennale, POST presents a special edition of the application dedicated exclusively to Commercial Break, available to download for free from iTunes. Titled POST Pavilion, the app includes information about the artists and their works, the curator’s statement, sponsor’s message and bespoke advertisement.

CURATOR

Neville Wakefield is a writer and commentator on contemporary art, culture and photography. Author of ‘Postmodernism: the Twilight of the Real’ (1990), Wakefield has contributed to numerous magazines Artforum, Art + Auction, Art in America, I-D, Interview, The New York Sunday Times, American, British and Italian Vogue, High Times, ACNE Paper and the Journal and many others. As well as contributing to monographs on many significant artists including Matthew Barney, Dan Colen, Vija Celmins, Daido Moriyama, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha and Rachel Whiteread, Wakefield co-edited the highly influential 'Fashion: Photography of the Nineties' (1996), was creative director of Tar Magazine and continues to work as creative director for Adam Kimmel Projects and creative consultant for Calvin Klein. In 2005 he co-founded ‘Destricted’, an ongoing series of pornographic films by artists such as Marina Abramovic, Larry Clark, Gaspar Noe which shook critics at Edinburgh, Lorcarno, Sundance and Cannes. Since then he has also served as Senior Curatorial Advisor for PS1 MoMA and Curator of Frieze Projects at the Frieze Art Fair. Recent shows include Greater New York (PS1 2010), 'Matthew Barney: Prayer Sheet with Wound and Nail' (Schaulager 2010) and the upcoming 'Jack Smith: Thanks for Explaining Me,' Barbara Gladstone Gallery opening May 6th 2011.

Emerging Artists and Masters at the Elgiz Museum

As the pioneering museum of contemporary art in Turkey, Elgiz Museum Istanbul is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. The Anniversary Program starts with a new selection from the Elgiz Collection entitled “Unbounded” and Project Room exhibitions hosting emerging artists and curators. At the main gallery, the museum started exhibition series of masters with artists from the collection.

Beyond Cultural Boundaries

A selection from the Elgiz Collection, “Unbounded” in the Main Gallery is on display between 23 February-20 August 2011 and is composed of works from the Collection that have never been on view together. The show brings together recent acquisitions such as works by Luo Jie and Liu Chun Hai, Bjarne Melgaard, Azade Köker and Pınar Yolaçan, Paul Hodgson and American artist Donald Baechler with works already on the temporary exhibition by Jan Fabre, Sol LeWitt, Gilbert&George, Tracy Emin, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, Honathan Meese, David Salle, Paul McCarthy, Robert Gligorov, Fabian Marcaccio.

The succesful integration of Proje4L as a pioneering contemporary art initiative with Elgiz Collection together express in “Unbounded” the power of contemporary art to go beyond all cultural boundries by extending the limits of vision and perception in a universal visual language.

A Pioneering Institution in Turkey

Proje4L was founded by architect Dr Can Elgiz in 2011 in a space he designed specifically as a museum. In its first years, the institution was defined as “an avant-garde contemporary art space” under the directorate of Vasıf Kortun. It became the first initative in Turkey to put forth academic discourse revolving around this concept and to support young artists to produce and display their work. Hans Ulrich Obrist, Charles Esche, Chris Dercon, Dan Cameron, Kari Immoen, Ayşe Erkmen, Francsco Bonami, Jerome Sans, Erden Kosova, Marta Kuzma, Ali Akay, Suhail Malik and Paolo Colombo are only some of the names who gave lectures and joined panel discussions on the relation between contemporary art and private institutions and the transformative nature of art’s role in society. Many well-known contemporary Turkish artists of this day were presented to the world art stage in Proje4L, as they were given the change to open their initial exhibitions. The institution was also the first Turkish contemporary art space to house exhibitions of Turkish artists that were known internationall, not yet recognized in Turkey. Halil Altındere, Kutluğ Ataman, Hüseyin Çağlayan, Aydan Murtezaoğlu, Bülent Şangar, Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Cengiz Çekil, Hale Tenger, Fikret Atay, Erinç Seymen, Cengiz Tekin, Haluk Akakçe and Leyla Gediz are only some of the artists whose works were shown in Proje4L between 2001-2005. Additionally, Proje4L presented exhibitions including works by international contemporary artists together with Turkish artists and projects combining music, media arts and visual arts. It thus became the first establishment, other then the Istanbul Biennial to show contemporary art.

In 2005 Proje4L was transformed into a private collection museum to exhibit Elgiz Collection. The mission established in the inital years are continued by opening up the Project Rooms as an exhibition space for young curators and artists. The Museum supports young artists and contemporary art production in Open Archive Room and the Project Rooms. World-known collectors are invited to give lectures on their experience in collecting art. Proje4L/Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art, which has become a cultural ambassador due to its global collection and international relations, also continues to bring together Turkish artists and international curators.

“Elgiz Koleksiyonu’ndan Bir Seçki” Çırağan Palace Kempinski Sanat Galerisi’nde

İstanbul, 28 Mart 2011; “Proje 4L/Elgiz Çağdaş Sanat Müzesi”nin çağdaş sanatın dünyadaki ve Türkiye’deki önemli sanatçılarının eserlerini barındıran bir seçkisi Çırağan Palace Kempinski Sanat Galerisi’nde 6 Nisan-17 Mayıs tarihleri arasında sergileniyor. Haldun Dostoğlu’nun küratörlüğündeki “Elgiz Koleksiyonu’ndan Bir Seçki”, sanatçıların fotoğraf, dijital medya işleri ve yerleştirmelerini içeriyor. Sergi ayrıca 2001’de öncü bir çağdaş sanat alanı olarak kurulan ve Elgiz Koleksiyonu ile bütünleşen kimliğiyle 10. yılına giren müzenin kutlama etkinliklerinden biri. Maslak’taki müze mekanından Çırağan Sarayı’na giden bu koleksiyon seçkisi, Fransa’da Versailles Sarayı’nda yapıldığı gibi çağdaş sanatın saray ortamında konumlandırılması şeklinde düşünüldü.

6 Nisan’dan 17 Mayıs 2011’e kadar günün her saati ücretsiz olarak gezilebilecek sergide eserlerini görebileceğimiz çağdaş sanatçılardan bazıları, Burhan Doğançay, Antonio Riello, Ramazan Bayrakoğlu, Barbara Kruger, Bruno Peinado, Cindy Sherman, Gilbert & George, Kezban Arca Batıbeki, Pınar Yolaçan, Tracey Emin.

Tarihi Sarayda Güncel Sanat

Haldun Dostoğlu küratörlüğünde Elgiz Koleksiyonu’ndan seçilen eserlerin popüler konu ve fikirlere yatkınlığı ile güncel ve kışkırtıcı estetik dilleri, Çırağan Sarayı'nın oryantalist ve eklektik mimarisiyle tezat oluşturuyor.

Modern yaşamı oluşturan herşeyi, ticari, hissi, soylu veya seçkin gibi ayrımlar gözetmeden gözlemleme, kaydetme ve sergileme prensibiyle işler üreten Gilbert (1943, İtalya) ve George'un (1942, İngiltere) bu iki eş çalışması, sanatçıların Hindistan yolculukları sırasında topladıkları ve iki ünlü Bollywood yıldızını gösteren bir dizi seri imalat kartpostalı sanat eserine dönüştürür. Burhan Dogançay'ın (1929 İstanbul, Türkiye) pembe renkli ahşap kapısı, sanatçının 1966 tarihli ünlü Pembe Kapı kolaj resminin heykel olarak bir çeşitlemesidir; toplanmış kapı parçaları tuval üstüne yerleştirilmiş ve renklendirilmiştir. Bruno Peinado (1970, Montpellier, Fransa), buluntu nesnelerle çalıştığı neo-pop işlerinde, tanıdık biçim ve kimliklerle oyunlar oynar. Antonio Riello'nun (1958, İtalya) işi, iskambil kartlarından oluşan duvarların arasında uzanan yemyeşil bir futbol sahasının veya eskinin bir amfitiyatrosunun fotoğrafıdır; eğlence, güç, rekabet ve gösteriyi akla getirir. Amerikan halkının tüketim kültürünü, gündelik yaşamdan koparıp ikonlaştırdığı nesneler ile sorgulayan Paul McCarthy'nin (1945, ABD) fotoğrafladığı iki mayonez kavanozu ikonik birer imaja dönüşmüştür. Barbara Kruger (1945, New Jersey, ABD) günümüzün kitle iletişim imajlarını kendine mal ederek ve görselle yazıyı birleştirerek, insan bedeni üstünde şiddet ve baskı uygulayan sosyal ve kültürel klişeleri hedef alır. Türkiyeli popüler şarkıcı ve oyuncuların bir takım ucuz fotoğrafları ile raflar üstünde biblolar, Kezban Arca Batıbeki'nin (1956, İstanbul, Türkiye) bir 'alt sınıf estetiğini' yansıtan duvar yerleştirmesini oluşturur.

Kendel Geers (1968, Johannesburg, Güney Afrika), ünlü La Sainte Vièrge dizisinin bir parçası olan bu monokrom deseninde, İlahi Bakire'yi erotik bir figüre dönüştürür; modern yaşamın gerçekliğini sorgular, kurallara karşı gelir. Dizden aşağısı boyanmış ve heykelsi bir poza bürünmüş olan bir çift kadın bacağı, Özlem Günyol'un (1977, Ankara, Türkiye) fotoğrafının öznesini oluşturur. Bu bacaklar, öncesi ve sonrası ancak tahmin edilebilecek bir performansın içinde asılı kalmış izlenimi verir. Bir başka performatif iş, Tracey Emin'in (1963, Londra, İngiltere) Bazen adlı fotoğrafıdır. Fotoğraf, Emin'i eteklerine paralar iliştirilmiş bir gelinlik içinde, Kıbrıs'ın kurak arazilerini arşınlarken gösterir. Cindy Sherman (1954, New Jersey, ABD) bu fotoğraf işinde başka yüzlercesi gibi yine kendini kullanır ve bu da yine bir otoportre değildir; görülen, Sherman'ın canlandırdığı kadın stereotiplerinden biridir, insan ruhunun karanlık ve karmaşık yüzünü yansıtır. Yaşam Şaşmazer (1980, İstanbul, Türkiye) ise insana dair korku, masumiyet, kızgınlık ve kötülük gibi özellikleri çocuk heykellerinde yansıtır. Pınar Yolaçan'ın (1981, Ankara, Türkiye) fotoğraf işinde, klasik portre resmiyle vesikalık fotoğraf arasında gidip gelen duruşu içindeki kadın, boynunda işkembeden bir 'kolye' asılı halde kameraya poz verir.

In conjunction with the Greater New York exhibition, the Rotating Gallery has offered space for additional curatorial voices, namely four New York-based curators who work without a regular physical space. By inviting the involvement of these curators, Greater New York engages not only emerging artists in the area, but also the curators who work with them. While the larger exhibition is the result of a collaboration between three curators, the Rotating Gallery offers a more singular view of new art in New York. Rotating Gallery is on view in the First Floor Drawing Gallery.

The second rotation, the backroom organized by ICI Executive Director Kate Fowle , opens June 19.

the backroom invites the exhibitors to present source materials that inform and support their thinking, extending the potential for getting to know the artists and their work. More akin to a temporary archive and reading room than an exhibition, the backroom consists of participant’s influences, inspiration, and research.

Visitors are invited to browse the materials according to their own interests, or search by referencing the binders that catalogue the items submitted by each artist. In this way, the audience takes on the role of archaeologist, learning more about the artistic processes behind the art practice. The result echoes ICI’s longstanding New York Studio Events, where first-hand experiences with artists’ in their studio has given many people insight into practices as they are in development

Join us for a special two-part series of talks by ten artists represented in MoMA PS1's Greater New York 2010, (May 23–October 18), an exhibition of work by artists in the New York metropolitan area who engage in a wide range of art practices and mediums. In sessions consisting of short and dynamic presentations of twenty images, twenty-five seconds per image, loosely modeled on an informal Japanese presentation style, artists discuss their work, their creative process, and other issues in contemporary art.

Presenting artists include Xaviera Simmons, David Benjamin Sherry, Pinar Yolaçan, Erin Shirreff, and Michele Abeles.

The Meh Generation: 'Greater New York' at PS1

If Greater New York, the broad survey of contemporary art at PS1 reveals anything about the state of our culture, it's that we're wallowing in a heavy malaise.

The show, a look at the work of more than five dozen artists working in the greater metropolitan area, can get exhausting. There are statements about our crippled environment (plants doused in concrete), domestic anguish (an armoire studded with knives) and insalubrious sexuality (one artist photographed his mother having sex). Overall, there seems to be a lot of chatter about what is wrong with our society, but little on how to set things right.

Thankfully, the show isn't all all disaffected negativity. Like all surveys, this is a mixed bag -- and there are some wonderful bright spots. A number of pieces stand out for their passion and inventiveness. Three of our favorites:

Pinar Yolaçan, the Mother Goddess series: An otherworldy photographic series, in which the photographer known for taking elegant portraits of women wearing meat (yes, meat), turns her attention to zaftig ladies clad in full bodysuits that obscure their faces. It's part S&M, part Venus of Willendorf -- all of it weirdly and totally gripping. (The Moment has a good slideshow if you want to see more.)

Rashaad Newsome, the conductor (fortuna imperatrix mundi) & the conductor (primo vere omnia sol temperat): Set to a pumping, remixed Carmina Burana, Newsome has spliced together hundreds of hand gestures taken from hip-hop and other videos, and timed them so that they appear to conduct the music. The effect: Positively hypnotizing. You can view the piece on Newsome's website, but nothing beats the big-screen, surround-sound set-up at the museum.

Sharon Hayes, REVOLUTIONARY LOVE: I AM YOUR WORST FEAR, I AM YOUR BEST FANTASY: This large-scale video and object installation features footage and audio that the artist shot during two performances that she organized at the political conventions in 2008. Part love letter, part queer politics manifesto, part flamboyant act of defiance, this energizing piece features participants doing a group reading of a text written by Hayes. Do not miss.

The Opening Day Celebration for Greater New York is Sunday, May 23 from 12-6PM.

Greater New York, the third iteration of the quintennial exhibition organized by MoMA PS1 and The Museum of Modern Art, showcasing some 68 artists and collectives living and working in the metropolitan New York area, will open at MoMA PS1 on May 23 and run through October 18, 2010. The 2010 exhibition will not only present recent work made within the past five years, but also will foster a productive workshop where artists will be invited to experiment with new ideas within MoMA PS1's building for the duration of the exhibition.Greater New York is organized by Klaus Biesenbach, Director of MoMA PS1 and Chief Curator at Large at The Museum of Modern Art; Connie Butler, The Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings, The Museum of Modern Art; and Neville Wakefield, MoMA PS1 Senior Curatorial Advisor.

Covering a full range of practices and mediums, the artists in Greater New York are inspired by living in one of the most diverse and provocative centers of cultural activity in the world. The exhibition centers largely on the process of creation and the generative nature of the artist's studio and practice. A number of artists are being commissioned to work in residence in MoMA PS1's gallery space to shoot photographs and video, rehearse and realize performances, and stretch the notions of sculpture, painting, photography, film, and video-making.

The Greater New York 2010 curators selected artists through studio visits, review of recommendations, mailed submissions, and through Studio Visit, a new initiative on www.MoMAPS1.org that invites artists to present their artwork and studios online. Over 750 Studio Visit submissions were reviewed by the curatorial team.

Projects at MoMA PS1 Concurrent with Greater New York

In conjunction with Greater New York, three special presentations will further explore the five-year trajectory of New York's creative community in three locations within the building beginning May 7. These presentations are part of MoMA PS1's Free Space program, a recent initiative offering free gallery space to select non-profit organizations, independent curators, artists, and collectives to experiment and generate public programming.

5 Year Review

MoMA PS1's First Floor Painting Gallery will be dedicated to 5 Year Review, a showcase of some of the most important exhibitions, performances, concerts, movies, fashion, design, happenings, and events to have occurred in the past half decade. Rather than a comprehensive history of art and culture in the New York area, 5 Year Review will instead reflect the idiosyncratic nature of individual taste and memory as recommended by an invited group of fellow curators and critics.

A series of performances and public programming generated by participatingGreater New York artists will also take place in the Painting Gallery. These performances will be scheduled throughout the exhibition to explore the recent proliferation of process-oriented art and ephemeral forms of practice that are currently influential in New York and internationally.

Rotating Gallery

In the neighboring First Floor Drawing Gallery, four New York-based guest curators-Olivia Shao, Kate Fowle, Cecilia Alemani, and Clarissa Dalrymple-will organize a series of exhibitions that will turn over every five weeks. Functioning as a more singular view of new art in New York, Rotating Gallery welcomes additional curatorial voices, specifically from curators who work without institutional affiliations with regular gallery space.

Cinema

The basement level Vault will be transformed into a movie theater for screenings of films and video. Film curators Thomas Beard and Ed Halter, cofounders of Light Industry, Brooklyn, have been invited to program the theater with an ongoing presentation of narrative films and special screenings.

Beyond a Simple Fashion Statement

In David Rosetzky’s video portrait of Cate Blanchett in “Dress Codes” at the International Center of Photography, this Australian actress looks startlingly ordinary, if not frumpy. She wears clunky boots, unflattering slacks and a sagging black tank top. So attired, she moves around a raw, cavernous offstage space, picking up a chair, putting it down, sitting on it, getting up again, occasionally moving her hands in small, dancelike gestures. All the while we hear her talking intently, on the voice-over, about the craft of acting.

At one point Ms. Blanchett dons a loose, sleeveless dress; another top; and a well-worn bomber jacket, creating the impression of someone traveling without benefit of luggage, wearing all her clothes at once. She stretches out on the floor, then rises and sheds the added clothing. Finally, to tinkling vaudeville music, she does some nimble soft-shoe steps. This piece seemed pretty mousy for an exhibition about garments in recent photography and video. But then I realized that the lack of sartorial display was a kind of deprivation that made me embarrassingly aware of my own superficiality: I’m afraid I like famous movie stars, especially female ones, to dress the part.

“Dress Codes” is the third triennial mounted by the International Center of Photography. It is also the third and final phase of the center’s Year of Fashion, hence the theme. Perhaps predictably, this show isn’t as good as the previous Year of Fashion exhibitions: exhaustive surveys of the fashion work of Edward Steichen and Richard Avedon; the extraordinary “Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now”; and a display of works from the center’s collection called “This Is Not a Fashion Photograph.”

But triennials and biennials, being dedicated to new art, are harder to do well. “Dress Codes” is better than most shows of this kind; the good work outweighs the weaker.

The exhibition raises the question of whether biennials and triennials should have themes or just select the best work within their designated area of concern; its answer is to stretch its theme so thin that it all but disappears. You begin to feel that just about anyone working with a camera could have been included. After all, most images of people involve some form of dress, and where there is dress, there are dress codes.

Clothing is a language that we study carefully and read almost reflexively, like the expression on a person’s face. What we wear is an interface between our bodies (and our selves) and the world, a form of privacy and perfection as well as a public statement. In the catalog these points are illuminated with quotations isolated on pink pages.

From Oscar Wilde: “A history of dress would be a history of minds; for dress expresses a moral idea; it symbolizes the intellect and disposition of a nation.”

From Diane Arbus: “Everybody has this thing where they need to look one way but they come out looking another way, and that’s what people observe.”

And from the German sociologist and philosopher Georg Simmel, writing in 1908, comes a brilliant progression of observations on the human desire for recognition and esteem within one’s social environment (which dressing, nicely, partly reflects). This desire can transmute into a need for “attention that others do not receive,” then into the desire to be envied, and finally into the will to power. Nathalie Djurberg’s colorful clay animation “New Movements in Fashion,” from 2006, captures something of the violence that an obsession with clothes can cause, but it’s only the will to power as shared by five garment-grabbing women.

More seriously, “Tagged,” a 2003 three-channel video by Julika Rudelius, a German-born artist based in Amsterdam, documents young, Dutch-born Arab men discussing the importance of appearances while modeling the designer clothes that consume most of their — or their family’s — meager earnings.

“Dress Codes” confirms that the camera arts are alive and well and are being deployed by artists who alternately extend or subvert traditions of portraiture, still life, documentary and storytelling, often adding permutations to the surprisingly vital postmodern strategies of photo appropriation and setup photography. The important influence of the Pictures artists, who emerged in the early 1980s and were often women, is tacitly acknowledged by the inclusion of Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, Martha Rosler, Laurie Simmons and Silvia Kolbowski. A few of these, especially Ms. Sherman, are doing some of their best work right now.

The inclusion of others feels reflexive and obligatory. Important as she is, Ms. Rosler, for example, should take a time-out and come up with fresh ideas; her incongruous juxtapositions via photo montage — here, men in Dolce & Gabbana suits inserted into a flaming Middle Eastern battlefield — have developed little since the 1970s.

But inclusions that feel obligatory are not limited to women: Stan Douglas — another ubiquitous presence in shows of this kind — is represented by a gorgeous, and seamless, composite photograph, “Hastings Park, 16 July 1955.” It shows a crowd of people in period dress and attests primarily to the skills of wardrobe, hair and makeup crews.

Most of the show’s best moments are provided by relatively young and/or unknown artists. One of the strongest impressions is made by a German named Thorsten Brinkmann, who disguises himself with strange mixtures of everyday garments and objects to evoke terrorists, knights and video-game rogues. His face is never seen, and he often covers a hand or a leg with a box or cylinder. The unexpected geometry has a powerful effect, at once abstract and monstrous.

Yto Barrada, born in Paris to Moroccan parents, deconstructs a more utilitarian form of masquerade in a grid of nine images. They show a Moroccan woman shedding the layers of textiles she wears under her robes in order to smuggle them out of Morocco. Economic necessity generates a homemade fat suit.

Richard Learoyd, from Britain, pursues traditional portraiture in photographs of a young woman named Agnes that are large, richly colored and finely detailed, and possessed with a wonderful gravity; each print is unique, improbably made with a room-size camera obscura.

Pinar Yolaçan — born in Turkey, trained in art in London and living in Brooklyn — seems to take inspiration from Rembrandt in her dark portraits of Afro-Brazilian matrons on the island of Itaparica. For each she makes a gown based on historical Portuguese fashions from vintage fabrics and animal products. At first the faces of these women dominate. Then sleeves of fish skin, a ruff collar made of livers and a tiered décolletage of animal organs come into focus, intensifying the women’s already formidable presences.

Portraiture becomes wilder in the large color photographs of the Brooklyn artist Mickalene Thomas, with their overdone sendups of 1970s blaxploitation-film settings. Each focusing on a voluptuous woman who may or may not actually be female, these images are confrontational and dazzling.

Gender is bent less seamlessly in the jewel-like Polaroids by another New York artist, Jeremy Kost, which show the denizens of the city’s club scene, often in full cry.

Meanwhile, Hu Yang, an artist from Shanghai, matches the edge-to-edge intensity of Ms. Thomas’s works with small color photographs that are less about garments than about standards of living. They document Shanghai residents in their homes, meditating on class, longing and interior decoration as a form of dress.

“Mumbai: A Laundry Field,” a four-channel video by the Korean-born artist Kimsooja, who is based in New York, examines the everyday life of fabric — from its intoxicating color to the low-paying, backbreaking labor of laundering it — on different levels of Indian society.

There’s more to see. I recommend Hank Willis Thomas’s altered photographs; the sexually charged yet chaste photo collages of Wangechi Mutu; and, for summoning the standards of decorum and beauty of earlier eras, Lorna Simpson’s evocative found photographs of black women and Tanya Marcuse’s grisaille platinum-palladium photographs of bustles, bustiers and armor.

“Dress Codes” has been organized by Christopher Phillips and Carol Squiers, curators at the International Center of Photography; Kristen Lubben, an associate curator; and Vince Aletti, an adjunct curator. It further departs from the biennial-triennial tradition, and many other museum shows, for that matter, with its demographics; an astounding 70 percent of the participating artists are women. Apparently, only 4 of the 34 artists in the show are both white and male.

The International Center of Photography is proud to present Dress Codes: The Third ICP Triennial of Photography and Video, a global survey of today’s most exciting and innovative photography and video art. As ICP’s signature exhibition—and the only one of its kind in America—this year’s Triennial promises to be the most dynamic yet, featuring over 100 recent works by 34 artists from 18 countries. The newly released roster of artists includes such rising stars as Mickalene Thomas, Yto Barrada, Kimsooja, and Thorsten Brinkmann, as well as established artists such as Cindy Sherman, Stan Douglas, and Lorna Simpson. Dress Codes opens to the public on October 2, 2009, at the International Center of Photography (1133 Avenue of the Americas at 43rd Street), and remains on view through January 17, 2010.

As with previous ICP Triennials, this year’s exhibition has a thematic focus: fashion. The artists in Dress Codes understand fashion as a form of social communication, and use costume, clothing, and disguise to create a rich visual language filled with specific references to history, culture, gender, and geography. They cast a curious eye on the issues evoked by fashion and the past year’s exhibitions: How do we construct the selves that we show to the rest of the world? How is cultural identity or individuality expressed in an era of global culture? How can clothing, beauty, and style be employed to define community, fabricate fantasies, or signal power? And, in the midst of widespread economic crisis, how do we now regard the aesthetic of excess and high style that pervaded the past decade?

The 2009 Triennial marks the culmination of ICP’s Year of Fashion—a series of groundbreaking exhibitions that explored fashion photography in its widest social and cultural contexts. Following a series of extraordinarily well-received exhibitions of historical and contemporary fashion photography—such as Avedon Fashion 1944–2000, Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, The Condé Nast Years 1923–1937, and Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now—Dress Codes shifts the spotlight to image-makers who critically examine fashion’s relationship to art and other social phenomena.

Against this background, the works that have been selected for Dress Codes engage notions of fashion, costume, and personal style in innovative and unexpected ways. The curatorial team responsible for this selection is comprised of Vince Aletti, Kristen Lubben, Christopher Phillips, Carol Squiers, and curatorial assistant Judy Ditner. They will contribute to the exhibition’s wide range of educational materials and programs, including tours, lectures, outreach programs, and an online photo gallery, as well as a fully-illustrated exhibition catalogue published by ICP/Steidl. Bringing together photography and video works in a lively mix, it will underscore the new attention being directed to the relation of still and moving images by many artists today.

This exhibition was organized by the International Center of Photography with lead support from the ICP Exhibitions Committee. Additional support was provided by Marjorie and Jeffrey A. Rosen; Artur Walther; The Joseph and Joan Cullman Foundation for the Arts; Mary Ann and Frank Arisman; Peter Guggenheimer; Andrew and Marina Lewin; Étant donnés, the French-American Fund for Contemporary Art, a Program of FACE; the Mondriaan Foundation, Amsterdam; Roberta and Steven Denning; Omar H. Al-Farisi; Agnes Gund; Sandy and Ellen Luger; and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.

The ICP Triennial was established in 2003 with Strangers, an exploration of personal estrangement and the social consequences of globalization and diaspora, followed in 2006 by Ecotopia, featuring works by leading artists around the theme of environmental change. It is the only recurring exhibition in the United States to focus on international contemporary photography and video, providing an unparalleled opportunity for U.S. audiences to encounter new works by recognized figures and to discover exceptional artists who have not yet received wide attention in this country.

Dress Codes Highlights

Valérie Belin’s color portraits of striking but eerily vacant-looking fashion models examine the artifice of the beauty industry. Her unsettling images blur the line between living model and manufactured mannequin.

Clothing becomes a metaphor for concealment in Yto Barrada’s sequence of photographs of an elderly female smuggler who demonstrates how to transport contraband goods into Morocco.

In the online “virtual world” Second Life, Cao Fei’s avatar China Tracy stars in an elaborately costumed high-fashion shoot. Using in-gallery computer stations, museum visitors will be able to explore Cao Fei’s RMB City, an ambitious urban environment built in cyberspace.

Through an array of female characters who race frantically through outfit changes, animation artist Nathalie Djurberg’s New Movements in Fashion looks at the unpredictable ways in which attire shapes individual identity.

In the large-format color tableau Hastings Park, 16 July 1955, Stan Douglas conjures up a crowd of Canadian race-track patrons whose detailed period clothing conveys subtle indications of their working-class status.

Taking an ironic look at the luxury auto industry, Jacqueline Hassink’s video BMW Car Girls follows the interplay of female greeters and male visitors at the exclusive Paris Auto Show.

Kimsooja’s four-channel video installation Mumbai: A Laundry Field is a meditation on the ubiquity of brilliantly hued textiles in the Indian cityscape, and their place in the life of the city.

Culling imagery from fashion, ethnographic, and pornographic magazines, Wangechi Mutu creates elaborate photo-collages that scramble representations of race and gender to question current conventions of beauty.

In her recent multifigure portraits, Cindy Sherman presents aspiring fashionistas whose elaborate attempts at individual style run comically awry.

Lorna Simpson’s newest work, Please remind me of who I am, comprises one hundred black-and-white photobooth images and inkwash drawings, individually framed and arranged in a loose cluster on the wall. The photos depictanonymous African-American subjects from midcentury America who created portraits of themselves using the private mirror of the photobooth.

In his Unbranded series, Hank Willis Thomas searches through decades of print advertisements for clues to the changing public image of African-American life. By removing the typography and other product information from these images, he enables an unexpected vision of race, class, and history to emerge from these commercial photographs.

Mickalene Thomas’s vivid color photographs of African-American women in household settings explore black identity from the 1970s to the present, using exuberant patterns of clothing, wall coverings, and upholstery to suggest a provocative blend of femininity and power.

The stunning life-size portraits in Pinar Yolaçan’s series Maria depict women from Itaparica, an island off the Brazilian coast. These women, ranging in age from twenty-seven to ninety, are shown wearing bizarre but visually stunning garments that the artist, a trained fashion designer, created by ingeniously combining fabrics with gleaming slices of raw meat obtained from local markets.

Book of the month. Beer of the month. Bacon of the month. For 2009, the Lower East Side gallery Invisible Exports has established Artist of the Month. The gallery has invited an impressive roster of curators including Gianni Jetzer, the director of the Swiss Institute, and Matthew Higgs, the White Columns director, to select one artist to create a limited-edition work each month. January’s calendar boy was Willam Powhida, whose “Post-Boom Odds” places bets on the chances of any of today’s art stars mattering 10 years from now. The “body trash artist” Dash Snow gets a 50-to-1 chance of surviving (we’re talking strictly his career here), while the goth and gloom artist Banks Violette has a brighter outlook at 5 to 1. For April, the critic Ana Finel Honigman selected the Turkish-born photographer Pinar Yolacan, who created “Boro” (above). You can collect all 12 for $2,400 (which includes shipping and handling).

Life's traces are seen as imprints on the body, as sleep wrinkles, bites or bruises. Traces such as fingerprints, handprints or other bodily marks in the works are direct imprints of the artist, a kind of personal stamp. An imprint can also be indirect, as for example a depression on the surface of a sculpture made by an explosion. Imprints in some of the works point to memories or some long-forgotten event. An imprint left by a memory can often be more permanent than one left on the body.

The starting point of is the human body and the traces left by and on the body. The works bear witness to the many different ways in which interaction with our visual environment can take place also through the body.

En 2007, lors des travaux du tunnel ferroviaire reliant de part et d’autre du Bosphore la rive asiatique au continent européen, on découvre les restes d’un port de commerce et d’anciennes fortifications remontant à l’époque de Constantin. Cette découverte est majeure. D’une part, pour ce qu’elle révèle de la relation d’Istanbul avec le bassin méditerranéen, et d’autre part, pour ce qu’elle dévoile des strates historiques qui la fondent - grecques, romaines, byzantines, ottomanes. Comme si son passé avait refait surface, sédiments mis à nu, ce que l’histoire avait tenté d’effacer au gré des conquêtes et des catastrophes naturelles. Mégalopole de 14 millions d’habitants, Istanbul révèle les lignes de fractures incessantes entre deux extrêmes (Ouest et Est), entre laïcité et religieux, modernité et tradition. L’exposition présentée au Palais des Beaux- Arts de Lille invite à traverser les strates de son histoire, ses transformations radicales, de l’Empire byzantin à la révolution kémaliste. On découvre ses facettes multiples, les interstices d’une ville dédiée au brassage des genres, où cohabitent identités contrariées, résistances à l’ordre moral, tensions extrêmes et humour teinté d’absurde, poésie et fragilité. Les artistes internationaux, turques ou issus de la diaspora nous racontent cette ville-matrice, en perpétuel devenir.

The Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos (CCA,Lagos) is pleased to present to a Durban audience its inaugural special projects initiative. “In the light of play” is an exhibition organised by Nigerian curator, Bisi Silva consisting of works by acclaimed artists; Berry Bickle (Zimbabwe) Sokari Douglas Camp (Nigeria/UK) Helga Kohl (Namibia) Bongi Bengu (South Africa), Pinar Yolacan (Turkey) and Monique Pelser (South Africa).

In the light of play eschews a prescribed conceptual framework to highlight multiple connections, interconnections and even disconnections in the work of individual artists. Through this format the exhibition communicates the way in which artists are dealing with some of the salient issues in contemporary society as they affect us individually and collectively; culture and tradition, identity, memory, presence and absence, the body, consumption and commodification as well as social injustice. The artists work in a diversity of media including scultpture, painting, photography and mixed media articulating a myriad of contextual and aesthetic concerns.

Pinar Yolacan presents works from her critically acclaimed series “Maria”, a collection of 22 stunning life size portrait photographs of African-Brazilian women. Taken over a twelve month period in Itaparica, Bahia, Maria portrays the women dressed in elaborate hand sewn couture costumes with trimmings of ‘unusual’ materials such as velvet, satin, tripe, placenta and liver. Through this series, Yolacan engages with issues of beauty , the female body, colonialism, and death.

Yolacan was born in Ankara, turkey in 1981. She studied fashion at Central Saint Martins and Media at Chelsea School of Art, London. She graduated with a BFA from Cooper Union in New York, USA.

Monique Pelser presents a lyrical yet haunting series of close-up portraits, appropriated from South African newspaper photographs and taken with a Nokia 5200. In “Bystanders” (2008) the starting point is the images of ‘marginal’ bystanders instead of central characters involved in various historical ways in South African history. The images are taken from newspapers reporting on local and global events such as the oil embargo, Nelson Mandela’s release, the state of emergency, the rugby world cup and the resignation of Thabo Mbeki. By making the pixilation process visible, Pelser explores a potential association between the painter’s brushstrokes and the digital photographic technique.

Pelser was born in 1976. She majored in photographic arts at the Rhodes University. She is a lecturer in fine art photography at Wits School of Art, Johannesburg.

Bongi Bengu’s work is from her recent “Emancipation” series in which she develops her themes on women’s rights, slavery, meditation, freedom of expression and the right to education and cultural imperatives. The individual emancipation leads to the freedom we desire to experience in our communities, our land and our continent. A renaissance of rebirth, renewal and freedom of choice.

Bengu was born in Eshowe. She obtained a BA cum Laude from Mount Vern College, Washington DC and an MA from Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town.

Berry Bickle calls her investigations of texts and language ‘rewrites’. She is particularly fascinated by the relationship of texts to history and memory. In her heavily layered works, in which she often prints, scratches, scribbles and even burns fragments of texts into and on a variety of surfaces, Bickle encourages us to reflect on the process of inscription. She draws on the decaying remnants of archival texts, anthologies, colonial travel narratives, family journals and the ubiquitous written messages on scraps of paper that inform our lives.

Bickle was born in 1959 in Zimbabwe. She studied at the Durban Institute of Technology and Rhodes University.

Sokari Douglas Camp’s work observes both the British and Nigerian cultural realities from the perspectives described as ‘outside’. However, she believes that this position helps her to perceive both cultures with great clarity describing her work as being ‘about what’s going on in London’ whilst also celebrating her Kalabari culture. In the past her work has been biting political criticism of the inhumanities perpetrated in the oil producing Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Recently Douglas Camp has been moving away from violent imagery in her work, saying ‘I wanted to get away from violence and I thought by focusing on beautiful things I could change something. Going back to my Adire collection and making very simple flat images I discovered so much about Yoruba culture’. Her more recent works are playful and celebratory sculpture of African textile and fashion as an investigation of identity.

Douglas Camp CBE was born in 1958 in Buguma, Nigeria to a Kalabari family. She moved to the UK where she studied art, first at the Central School of Art (1980-1983) and then at the Royal College of Art (1983-1986) majoring in Sculpture.

Helga Kohl’s “Kolmanskop” series are beautiful haunting photographs of the desolate landscape of the Namib Desert. The neglected architectural structures of the former diamond-mining town of Kolmanskop and her attempt to recapture a ‘glorious’ past, belie a complex narrative of man’s greed and exploitation of nature’s resource to the point of depletion.

Kohl was born in Silesia. (1943). She studied the techniques of photography at the Christoph Bath Photo Studio in Munster, Germany.

Bisi Silva, Curator, “ In the Light of Play” is the director/founder of the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos and an independent curator. Amongs her projects includes co-curator, Dak’Art Biennale (2006), “Democrazy:Three solo exhibitions and a publication”,(2008). Like a Virgin… Lucy Azubuike & Zanele Muholi, (2009). She is a curator of the 2nd Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, Greece in May 2009.

Carol Brown, Project/Curatorial Consultant. Was formerly Director of the Durban Art Gallery and currently works independently on a number of different international and national projects. She has collaborated with Bisi Silva to bring the exhibition to the Durban Art Gallery as a preview to the Johannesburg Art Fair.

Frankfurt presents “Turkish Realities”, premiering a cross-section of contemporary Turkish photography and video. The artist’s main inspiration
today tends to come from the bipolar opposites in Turkish society, which are mirrored in the situation of Istanbul itself. This unique metropolis
has embodied antagonistic tendencies for hundreds of years: Asia and Europe, tradition and modernism, Islam and Christianity. It is shaped by a
constant state of everyday confrontation between ever-changing elements. Between these two antipodes there are varied positions, which make up
the Turkish realities.
